There's no denying it's been a tough 12 months for Australia's hospo scene. Which means, now, there's never been a better time to show your support — and thanks to a brand-new, countrywide initiative, it's never been easier to do so.
Running throughout May, the inaugural Australian Cocktail Month is supporting bars and bartenders as they open up their doors again following a year of closures and restrictions. Brought to life by cocktail maven Penny Sippe, who's worked with the hospitality industry for over a decade, the event will see some of the best bartenders in the country mixing up top-shelf local and international spirits, including Glenfiddich whisky, Herradura tequila, Adelaide Hills Distillery, Bombay Sapphire, Chase, Brix Distillers, Feels Botanicals and Mr Black. Low- and no-alcohol options are also on offer, making sure nobody misses out.
How does it work? First, get yourself a $20 ticket, which unlocks an entire month of offers at 72 of the top-rated bars across Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane. Then, head to any of the participating venues and order from a special menu of cocktails created exclusively for the event, with all alcoholic drinks priced at $14, and non-alcoholic options at $10. There's no limit on how many times you can go to each bar, so if you find something you can't get enough of on night one, you're in luck.
So, where to go and what to drink? Sydney bars taking part include faves like Dead Ringer and The Duke of Clarence, while Melbourne stalwarts The Everleigh and Black Pearl lead the charge in that city. Over in Brisbane, drinkers can head to bars including The Gresham and Death and Taxes.
