Overview
If 2020 was the year of staying home, then 2021 will see us heading out and filling our nights with fun activities as much as possible. Good thing then that there's a bunch of top-notch performances coming to Brisbane next year thanks to Queensland Theatre's new season. Spanning everything from beloved favourites to new voices, the season will also see four world-premiere productions take to the stage. If it's love, laughter, tragedy, triumph or connection that you're after, you'll find it on the program.
Highlights include Trent Dalton's Boy Swallows Universe, which makes the much-anticipated leap from the page to the stage; trans romance Triple X, written by and starring playwright, comedian and performer Glace Chase; and biting pan-Asian satire White Pearl, which finds plenty to skewer in toxic corporate culture and casual racism. Or, you can check out Queensland Premier's Drama Award-winner Return to the Dirt, set in a funeral home in Toowoomba; #MeToo courtroom drama — and one-woman-show — Prima Facie; and Queensland Theatre's version of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew.
Because choosing just a couple of these shows to go to is a tough task, Queensland Theatre has season ticket packages already available, starting at just $30 per play if you're under 35. So, when Queensland Theatre's 2021 season officially kicks off on Saturday, January 30, you'll have everything covered.
It is also launching something completely new with its digital series Queensland Theatre at Home — in which you can catch A-class performances like the company's The Taming of the Shrew, Return to Dirt and Robyn Archer: An Australian Songbook from your couch. It's the first time the theatre has done anything like this, and it'll be streamed Australia-wide.
