Kelvin Grove Village Markets

Overview

Brisbane market entrepreneur Peter Hackworth runs the show here, setting up stalls across Musk Avenue and Blamey Street in Kelvin Grove Urban Village — a precinct built on the site of the former Gona Barracks, once used to train specialist militia units from the 1910s through to the 1960s. Where soldiers once drilled, QUT students and inner-city locals now cut through on their way to the coffee van.

Stalls run the full spread: fruit and veg, wood-fired sourdough, gourmet sauces, prime Angus beef and fresh pasta sit alongside arts and crafts, vintage clothing and independent designer fashion. Food stalls cover breakfast and then some — coffee, gyoza, cupcakes — for anyone who's shown up hungry.

Live music plays every Saturday morning, giving the market a soundtrack rather than just a backdrop, and more than a decade in, it's become the thing that gives this otherwise quiet corner of the inner city its weekend pulse.
