Sydney Ramen Spots Offering Big Comforting Bowls of Noodles for Takeaway and Delivery

From fried chicken-topped ramen to a vegan version, these are our favourite bowls of noodles to eat at home.

Many Sydneysiders are now self-isolating and social-distancing, cosying up at home and trying to make the best out of a pretty bad situation. While working from home, it can get hard to cook all three meals a day, everyday. And who are we kidding, its always good to get a break from your own cooking. Luckily, ramen is the perfect takeaway dish. It microwaves well, and you will probably have some leftovers you can repurpose for another delicious meal. There are heaps of eateries around Sydney serving up this Japanese classic, from staple tonkotsu to the more experimental, and many of them are providing takeaway and delivery options during this time. You'll find tsukemen at Ramen Zundo, karaage ramen at Ichi-ban Boshi, along with other spots offering spicy ramen, vegan ramen and breakfast ramen. Happy slurping.

If you are going out to pick up takeaway, have a look at the latest COVID-19 advice and social-distancing guidelines from the Department of Health.

Run by husband and wife team Scott Gault and Katie Shortland, Sydney’s super-popular ramen joint RaRa is offering takeaway and delivery from both its stores. On the menu, you’ll find three styles of free-range pork tonkotsu, highlighting the kitchen’s nose-to-tail approach, available in shio, black garlic or with smoky, Japanese chilli oil. The vegetarian ramen comes in either a vegan shio or a miso style, with soy milk lending a flavour reminiscent of pork. There’s also a soupless noodle dish called maze soba — akin to Japanese spag bol, without the mince. Plus, you can get local cans and a range of natural wines delivered straight to your door.

How? RaRa is offering takeaway and delivery from its Redfern and Randwick stores, order through this website.

Usually, Gaku only serves up its steaming bowls of ramen for lunch. But now they’re available for takeaway all day. You can choose from a variety of preparations, including a yuzu-spiked duck broth with smoked duck and duck meatballs, a seafood bowl with salty clam consommé and poached clams and a wagyu number. Chefs Haru Inukai (owner of the now-closed Sussex Centre Ramen Ikkyu and Elizabeth Bay’s BlancHaru) and Shimon Hanakura (ex-Aria) successfully combine their experience making traditional ramen and working at fine dining establishments. The only problem you’ll have with the ramen is getting your hands on a bowl. Only limited portions are made each day, so we suggest ordering earlier rather than later.

How? You can order takeaway through the website or by calling (02) 9380 2145.

Butter’s special ramen is back and available for takeaway and delivery. The warming bowl of broth is always a big hit among ramen fans — mainly because it tops the ramen with two of its crisp fried chicken tenders. Chef Julian Cincotta is popping it back on the menu from Tuesday, March 24 for the next few months. It’s be available for delivery via UberEats and Deliveroo and takeaway from Surry Hills from Sunday–Thursday, and every day at the Parramatta store. Bowls are $24 a pop.

How? Takeaway and delivery is available from both the Surry Hills and Parramatta Butter stores.

Ichi-ban Boshi is a well-known ramen in Sydney for a reason. It’s cheap and it’s delicious. While there are plenty of options on the menu, including some great gyoza, the ramen is the real hero here. The noodles are made fresh and cooked al dente and we recommend the karaage ramen, which is topped with melt-in-your mouth fried chicken. Having said that, their miso ramen is also worth your money, particularly if you only have a spare $10. Ichi-bans stores at The Galeries and Bondi Junction are both open for takeaway and delivery.

How? Delivery available via UberEats from Bondi and the CBD.

Hiding away in Crows Nest is Ryo’s, a little slice of Tokyo serving ramen as it should be: packed with flavour and in a huge, deep bowl that you’ll struggle to make it all the way through. There are a number of pork and chicken broths to choose from, but there is no going past their famous number eight: ramen in spicy chicken soup with roast pork, egg and shallots. To make it even better, add extra garlic and you’ll end your meal with your lips on fire and your belly full of satisfaction. Just make sure you pick up your order from the Crows Nest location, since the Bondi Junction local is temporarily closed.

How? Check out the menu here and call (02) 9955 0225 to order takeaway. Delivery coming soon.

The restaurant’s name, Chaco Bar, comes from the word charcoal, and while the Darlinghurst restaurant used to specialise in grilled yakitori, only serving ramen for lunch and one night a week, now it’s all ramen all the time. The Darlo spot is now serving its famed ramen in frozen ramen kits (all $23) in three different variations: fat soy, chilli coriander and tomato tantan. There’s also the option of gluten free noodles ($4), and two different curries ($10). Chaco is exclusively serving takeaway meals in its Darlinghurst location, and has closed its Potts Point location temporarily.

How? Check out the menu and DM your order on Instagram. Pick up is available Wednesday–Saturday 12–8pm.

Then, take it home, throw it in the microwave for five mins and you’ve got a steaming hot bowl of one of Sydney’s best ramen.

Tsukemen is the signature ramen at this cute World Square restaurant. You’ll get two bowls in your takeaway order — one containing the noodles, the other containing the extra-thick broth. To eat it, you dip the noodles in the broth then slurp it down (a technique that can take a mouthful or two to perfect). The broth is a richly flavoured tonkotsu soup — pork broth boiled over 12 hours to create a delicious ramen you’ll hope will yield enough for leftovers, with pork belly that melts in your mouth like it should. Spice it up and go for the extra chilli kick by ordering the Rich Zundo Red. Ramen Zundo is offering takeaway at both its World Square and Chatswood stores.

How? Call (02) 9264 6113 to order from World Square and (02) 8065 8099 to order from Chatswood. Delivery coming soon.
