Overview
Speakeasy Cinema and journalist Clementine Ford have teamed up to present a brand new monthly program featuring films by female filmmakers. Screening at Fitzroy's Grey Gardens Projects on select dates throughout spring, She Speaks First will showcase three excellent contemporary films from directors with two X chromosomes, before washing them down with a post-credits conversation about the place women occupy in the world of film today.
The season begins on Tuesday, September 29 with A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, which is hands down the best black and white Iranian hipster vampire western you'll see on the big screen this year (no but actually, it's awesome).
On Sunday, October 18 catch Gillian Robespierre's Obvious Child, starring Jenny Slate as a young stand-up comedian who needs to get an abortion. It may not sound it, but trust us when we say it's absolutely hilarious.
The series will conclude on Sunday, November 15 with Mary Dore's recent documentary She's Beautiful When She's Angry, which chronicles the history of the modern women's rights movement.
