Overview
Melbourne might be home to many a Japanese restaurant, but there's always room for more. Opened late in 2025, Sachi, a contemporary Japanese diner from the Clove Group (whose restaurant stable includes Atsu, Andzero and Common Cuts), showcases seafood in all its glory alongside playful cocktails and high-quality sake, all in a design-forward, neon-lit modern space.
Derived from the phrase umi no sachi, meaning treasures of the sea, Sachi brings sensational seafood to the CBD. While it certainly takes its seafood seriously, it aims to do so without pretension, keeping things laid-back and relaxed, like the casual, pop-in sushi joints in Japan.
"Sachi is about bringing a little piece of Japan to Melbourne. The best seafood experiences there aren't always formal or exclusive, and that's what we've tried to recreate here: exceptional ingredients, refined technique and genuine hospitality in a space that feels relaxed and welcoming," says Executive Chef Jin (ex-Kisumé).
Executive Chef Jin, Owner Reki Rei, Head Chef Shinwoo Hong, and Venue Manager Kaiya Yamaguchi run a tight ship at Sachi, with a menu that pays respect to Japan's sushi restaurant culture. They dry-age fish in-house to deepen flavour, making their signature chirashi don (a jewel-box of seasoned rice topped with a variety of seafood), as well as the sashimi and nigiri offerings, really stand out. Other signature dishes include the Uni Toro Rosti, chawanmushi with snow crab, prawn katsu with ebi chilli sauce, and calamari tempura.
A great way to experience the chefs' technique and skill is to choose one of Sachi's nigiri sushi omakase menus, one of the city's more affordable sushi set menus. Choose between 11 courses for $78.50, or 15 for $128.50 and be guided by the best of that day's seafood offering by the Itamae (sushi chef of the day) at the intimate sushi counter.
Channelling the vibes of late-night Tokyo, the contemporary space is elevated with stainless steel, exposed bricks, metal finishes and vibrant orange and red tones, hinting at the city's glowing evening skyline. Make yourself comfortable on a leather corset chair or at the sushi counter, and work your way through Japanese-inspired cocktails such as the Miso Cloud, Hojicha Tiramisu, and the Momo Chan, before moving on to the specialist sake selection.
