Overview
Founded in 1861, the NGV is the oldest and most visited gallery in Australia. It holds one of the most significant art collections in the country, spanning thousands of years and every major medium. The collection is split across two sites: NGV International on St Kilda Road, covering Europe, Asia, America and Oceania, and The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Fed Square, dedicated to Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian art from the colonial period to now.
A third site, The Fox: NGV Contemporary, is under construction at Southbank and due to open in 2028 as the country's largest dedicated home for contemporary art, design, fashion and architecture. Alongside the free permanent collection, the gallery runs a ticketed exhibition program, plus a full calendar of talks, tours and Friday night events.
