Overview
Can Joy Division be Joy Division with almost none of its original members? In fact, is any band more or less than the sum of its parts? Even thousands of years ago, there was some conjecture on this idea (although it had nothing to do with reforming a rock group), when the tale of this guy and his ship led a number of great thinkers to question exactly what it is that makes a thing a thing.
Is it possible that this much heavy thought means completely missing the point when it comes to rock 'n' roll? Fouding member Peter Hook is resurrecting Joy Division and bringing the band to Australia in September. There's no word at this point on who the replacement members will be (at a recent gig in Manchester, Hook was accompanied by his band, the Light, and former Happy Mondays singer Rowetta), but it seems, at the very least, interesting to find out.
Hook and said new band will play the entirety of Unknown Pleasures plus favourites (such as 'Love Will Tear Us Apart') at the following venues in September:
Friday, September 24 — Palais Theatre, Melbourne
Saturday, September 25 — The Enmore, Sydney
Monday, September 27 — Tivoli, Brisbane
And feel free to argue about the Ship of Theseus below.
