La Roux: Something for the whole family
We talk to La Roux before she hops on the Bacardi Express.
Since La Roux's infectious electro-pop exploded onto our radio frequencies in 2009, it's not rare to fumble from FM station to FM station only to hear Ellie Goulding agonising over another break-up, a long-lost lover, or becoming "Bulletproof". As well known for her generously sized quiffs and androgynous aesthetics as she is for those high-octane pipes, 21-year-old Ellie is often labelled as having a bit of a big gob, and recently wore a baggy t-shirt with the word 'CUNT' sprawled across it to a CD signing in London.
Following an exhaustive tour of Europe, La Roux has touched down in Australia to board the Bacardi Express, where they will play alongside Art vs Science, Miami Horror and Yves Klein Blue at the Big Top, Luna Park this Saturday. We managed to grab 30 seconds of their time.
Concrete Playground: You're headlining the Bacardi Express this Saturday - what can we expect from the show?
La Roux: A damn good time.
CP: What's been the highlight of touring so far?
LR: Playing to 30,000 people at Parklife last year was pretty special.
CP: You are one of the few artists played on both mainstream and alternative radio. What is it about La Roux that appeals to everyone?
LR: Something for the whole family to enjoy.
CP: There seems to be more and more emerging electro-synth artists out there (like new band Hurts). Where do you see this new genre going?
LR: To the dumper.
CP: What inspires your costumes and hairstyle?
LR: Life on the mean streets of Brixton, London.
CP: Who inspires your live performances?
LR: David Bowie, Prince and Michael Jackson.
CP: You recently played Rolling Stones 'Under my Thumb' at a show… will you be releasing this as a cover?
LR: We wont be releasing any cover versions. Not our thing.
CP: What can we expect from La Roux's next album?
LR: Sexier and funkier.
CP: If you had the pick of the barrel, whom would you collaborate with?
LR: The Knife.
CP: How do your exes feel when they listen to your songs on the radio?
LR: Privileged.
