We can’t keep Redfern’s retro Euro bar a secret, comrades.

Hidden in the depths of Redfern Continental, behind a wooden door, is Gunther's Dining Room (known to the locals as GDR). Boasting an 80s Eastern Europe feel, it is a den of retro green velour, vinyl and wooden panelling complete with a disco ball.

Cosy up in one of the booths or sit at the bar and pick something fun off the four-page cocktail menu. Drinks are inventive, largely tequila- and gin-based, and include cocktails like the Sloe Scobeyville Sling, made with sloe gin, bitter and Applejack.

Snacks are on offer at GDR as well. Olives — infused with garlic and chilli ($6) — are a welcome drink accompaniment, and for something a bit more filling there's the currywurst ($10). If a bigger hunger strikes, it's hard to pass on the steak frites ($20). There's a fully stocked wine bar available here, too, reflecting both old and new from Europe, New Zealand and Australia.
