Overview

This weekend, there’s no excuse not to get out and experience something new. Rolling round for another year, Marrickville’s Open Studio Trail makes navigating Sydney’s independent art scene as easy as can be. From March 5 to 6, over 53 studios across the local Marrickville area will swing open their doors for a weekend-long celebration of creativity and culture. Better yet, it’s all free. ALL OF IT.

With over 10,000 art lovers expected to descend into studios and galleries across MOST, your best bet is to get in early. See featured MOST and Art Month artist Anne Zahalka make bold and scathing comments on 1930s Australian social stereotypes, as she takes over Newtown Art Seat (a Marrickville Council initiative, displaying experimental contemporary artworks in local public spaces).

Get up close to the inner workings of a thriving artist collective at Mess with It: [PROJECT ROOM], where you'll learn the tricks of the trade from 10 contemporary visual artists and designers (including painter Camilla Lawson, fashion designer Chris Baldwin and sculptor Mark Swartz), with a weekend of demonstrations and exhibitions. Hit the pavement for Art on the Streets, a street art walking tour hosted by expert and author of Street Art of the Inner West Melinda Vassallo.

Take a workshop of two, peak into Sydney’s Smallest Gallery and make sure to head along to the closing night’s wrap party at Chrissie Cotter Gallery to reminisce the highlights of your art-filled weekend over a well-earned glass of wine.
