Overview
Guy Turland has come a long way since he first put a match to his camp oven on the debut episode of Bondi Harvest. The online cooking show, which went live in late 2012, has attracted more than 12,000 subscribers and won itself a contract with a YouTube channel based in the US. And now, Turland is set to take things to the next level, with the opening of his very own restaurant in Bondi Junction.
When it occupies the first floor of The Eastern in early December, the eponymous eatery will take on, in real life, the spirit of what's given Turland such kudos online: offering sustainable, local food, with laidback, beachy vibes. Promised dishes include quinoa pancakes, smoked pastrami salmon, Ottolenghi-inspired lunches and tapas. Fingers crossed for these tiramisu jars.
This won't be Turland’s first foray into the bricks and mortar scene. He co-owns North Bondi cafe, Jo and Willy’s Depot; and has worked at both the Icebergs and est. Plus, he'll be in good company; Mark Alston, director of Bondi Harvest, will be acting as business partner, while eccentric designer Michael Delany-Korabelnikova, who's been responsible for transforming Drink 'N' Dine's The Norfolk, The Forresters and the now-closed Abercrombie and Carrington hotels, will be taking care of the interior.
Bondi Harvest will open in early December 2015.
