Overview
In big news for Sydney's hospo scene, the country's largest hotel operator has acquired two of its most iconic pubs. Australian Venue Co has exchanged contracts to buy The Clock Hotel in Surry Hills and The Bank Hotel in Newtown, in partnership with a private, freehold property investor.
This huge deal marks a major shift in ownership after significant tenures by the previous owners. Managed by Solotel, The Clock tenure lasted 23 years, and The Bank Hotel's lasted 14. JLL Hotels & Hospitality Group introduced the portfolio to the market in May 2026 on behalf of private investors.
"The partnership between Australian Venue Co and institutional property capital represents a growing investment model in the hospitality sector, combining operational expertise with long-term real estate ownership to maximise both trading performance and asset value appreciation," says John Musca, Executive Director of JLL Hotels & Hospitality.
The Clock component of the transaction has raised the bar for market sales, marking the largest sale ever recorded for a food-and-beverage-focused pub in Australia with minimal gaming and no accommodation offering. The landmark corner hotel, established in 1863, has continued to generate significant revenue across its offering, benefiting from its proximity to many important precincts.
"Crown Street and King Street represent two fundamentally different but equally compelling hospitality environments, one defined by lifestyle dining and urban density, the other by entertainment culture and late-night trade. What unites The Clock and Bank Hotel is their ability to maintain relevance across generations of patrons, their position at the centre of high-traffic precincts, and their track record of consistent trading performance regardless of broader economic conditions," says Ben McDonald, Managing Director, Head of Pubs at JLL Hotels & Hospitality Group.
The sale pushes JLL's NSW pub transactions to over $1.4 billion this year alone, cementing its dominant market position.
