Overview

Since Marrickville holds the title as Sydney's centre for craft beer, it's no surprise that the locals are very, very into their brews. So much so that the suburb's even home to a thriving homebrew store — Hope & Grain. Here, you can grab everything from beginner brewing kits to high-end, professional equipment, as well as all of the necessary ingredients, including all different varieties of malts, hops and yeasts.

The staff are extremely knowledgeable but not pretentious, so complete brewing novices will feel comfortable here. Catering to all levels also means that, as your skill progresses, Hop & Grain can continue to be your one-stop shop for all things beer.

Apart from the brewing equipment, the shop hosts brewing courses for beginners through to all-grain pros, along with natural cider classes and homebrewer meet-ups. At the latter, you'll have the chance to meet other local homebrewers and try their concoctions. Quite a few of Sydney's brewing elite started out as homebrewers, too — including the owners of Wayward and Batch — so this side hustle could turn into a profession, should you wish.
