Overview

For those in Melbourne's inner north, Sense of Self (SOS) has been Collingwood's quiet spot for contemporary wellness since 2020, tucked in between warehouses revamped as art spaces and coffee spots. Now, the serenity-inducing bathhouse has heard the call coming from further north, as it prepares to open the doors to its debut Sydney location.

Set to launch in September in Surry Hills, locals can expect an unhurried destination, where the experience is guided by values over trends. Described as Sydney's most spacious indoor bathhouse, spanning an impressive 1200 square metres across two levels, Sense of Self Sydney will take up residence in a former industrial warehouse, not unlike its original venue.

At the centre of the experience will be the largest sauna in the Southern Hemisphere, an attention-grabbing detail. Yet the amenities extend far beyond, featuring two hot mineral pools, an expansive hammam steam room, dedicated sensory and relaxation areas, a walk‑through cold plunge, a bespoke retail offering and dedicated massage treatment rooms.

"Since opening Collingwood in 2020, we've always stayed close to what truly matters: belonging, care and a very human way of holding space," says Sense Of Self Founder and Director Freya Berwick. "Sydney continues that journey with a unique space within the city's fabric and a place that is understood best through experience with self and with others."

Designed for device-free peacefulness, the Surry Hills location will feature the bathhouse's popular 'Quiet Mornings', where daily sessions from 6.30am–12pm are enjoyed in silence. Meanwhile, the 'Scrub Station' is also coming to Sydney, allowing guests to choose their own products for a self-led hammam ritual.

Behind the Sense of Self Sydney's earthen aesthetic is architecture practice RITZ&GHOUGASSIAN, who've worked with an elemental palette of chrome, brick, shadow and rock to create a space that feels grounded and restrained. And for a sneak peek at the process, Sense of Self has been documenting the journey on their YouTube page.

Sense of Self Sydney will open in September at 529-531 South Dowling Street, Surry Hills. Head to the website for more information.
