Overview
Poneke makes no apologies for its prime waterfront location. The high floor to ceiling windows let in an abundance of light and allow for stunning views across the harbour, while the generous outdoor seating is perfect for people watching on a sunny day.
The menu, designed by Martin Bosley, is a creative and delicious affair, and the brunch menu is an absolute standout. On a recent visit with the parental unit, Mum and I shared the sautéed mushrooms, with lemon, feta and sorrel pesto on baguette ($17) and the scrambled eggs with Huffman's hot sauce ($17). The mushrooms were firm and tasty, with the feta and pesto packing a serious punch. While it's hard to go wrong with scram eggs, the hot sauce provided kick I never realised my eggs needed, until now. We washed our meals down with the promptly topped up bottles of sparkling house water (I love that this is becoming a thing) and single origin coffee from the impressive soft brew machine. On top of great food and drink, the service struck that often illusive balance of being attentive without being overbearing, making for a great brunch all round.
Open till late, Poneke is also a relaxed but refined spot for a working lunch or an after-work tipple, with a good range of beers and a simple but well-selected wine list. The extensive day menu includes a large range of small plates, plenty of seafood, and a number of pizzas and pastas.
All things considered, there’s little wonder Poneke is bustling throughout the day and well into the evening.
