Overview

Ahi Ka is Wellington's new family friendly event to celebrate and learn about Matariki. Including toasted marshmallows, fire on the water and hangi, there's something for every member of the family to enjoy.

Ahi Ka will be held at Wellington's waterfront on Friday, 21 June. Featuring four stages throughout the Odlins Plaza area, there will be Maori astrology, kapa haka, waiata, storytelling and poi.

Opening the evening will be a light procession featuring children from all over the greater Wellington region, some from as far as Paraparaumu. If you have a youngster in the parade, head to Whairepo Lagoon for the best viewing spot.

Live performances from the Royal New Zealand Air Force Brass, Rob Thorne, Hannah Neman, Lotte van Ginkel and stilt-walkers Kiss The Ground will entertain the family all evening, alongside the free outdoor live show around Te Papa Lake, the Ahi Tipua geothermal art installation and the nine braziers on Whairepo Lagoon honouring Matariki and her eight children.

Stay ahead of the game and keep up to date with the Ahi Ka updates via the Facebook page in case of rain. Postponed dates will be Saturday, 22 June or Sunday, 23 June 6–10pm.
