Overview
Drinking while completing run-of-the-mill activities is the latest trend to sweep through New Zealand. First there was the act of downing a cold one while attempting downward dog at beer yoga; now there's the perfect marriage of drinking and painting.
The exercise of staying hydrated between brush strokes apparently originated in Alabama in 2004 as a way for art students to tick off both painting and drinking. After noticing a gap in the market for a "regular, locally-run paint and drink night," Wellington artist Sarah Hume was inspired to start ArtyParty.
Each session will see local art enthusiasts create their own masterpiece to take home while enjoying the atmosphere of a local pub. Hume and another professional artist will be on hand to help participants through the process. The first drink is free. The first event on Wednesday 22 August will begin with van Gogh's 'Sunflowers'.
The events held weekly at The Southern Cross Garden Bar will support Inverlochy Art School (a registered charity) with a small donation per booking.
