Overview

There's been a bit of a resurgence in the popularity of public talks recently. They might've once been seen as a bit uncool, but these days, Wellington audiences have a whole lot of interesting panel discussions, seminars and talks to choose from on a weekly basis.

Forethought is an Auckland and Wellington event series that's keen to catalyse new ideas through contrasting and complementary speakers. Each event has two speakers from totally different fields and backgrounds, who each have the floor for 20 minutes to explore a theme. This week's Wellington talk focuses on 'reconstructing', with two contrasting viewpoints from speakers Karam Shaar and Kassie Hartendorp.

Karam is a Syrian national who's studying at Victoria University, who participated in protests that later turned into civil war. He'll be giving insights into conflict, crisis and protest in Syria based on his first-hand experience. Kassie Hartendorp (Ngāti Raukawa) is a youth worker and student whose work focuses on the interconnection of issues and connecting the dots to make anti-capitalist and decolonising changes on the ground.

This erudite duo's complementary areas of expertise will make for a pretty engaging evening and an excellent opportunity to connect with likeminded folk.
