Overview

Every year the Japanese Film Festival is held in cinemas across New Zealand with the goal to educate and encourage an interest in Japanese culture. Head down to Wellington's Roxy Cinema this November for three days of free Japanese cinema.

Each film will focus on unique aspects of Japanese culture, customs and tradition, giving Kiwis an insight into their way of life. Kicking off the festival on Friday, November 8, Born Bone Born will grace the big screen with an educational story following members of the Shinjo family as they embark on life after the passing of a loved one. Learn about the Japanese tradition of senkotsu, which literally means 'bone-washing' and appreciate beautiful Japanese filmmaking practices.

The festival will consist of five more incredible films, including supernatural dramedy Room Laundering, an adaptation of Jun Ikeido's Recall, crime thriller The Crimes That Bind, animated fantasy film Lu Over The Wall and love story The 8-Year Engagement. All films will be in Japanese with English subtitles. Admission to all films is free and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
