Overview
Matariki is one of the most important dates on Aotearoa's calendar. Marking the Māori New Year, it is a time of celebration and renewal. Characterised by the out-of-this-world rise of the Matariki star cluster (also known as the Pleiades), Te Papa will be hosting Wellingtonians for nine days of festivities beginning 15 June.
Free event Matariki Ritual will see the lighting of a ritual fire, while stories about Matariki are shared. It's an opportunity to celebrate the people (tangata), and earth, sea, and sky (whenua), while also enjoying Māori creation stories. You'll also be invited to present images and symbols representing yourself and families, as well as writing down your hopes and dreams for the year to come.
Nau mai, haere mai — join the festivities of Matariki.
