Overview
"Affordable, original art," may seem like an oxymoron, but it's become the norm in New Zealand thanks to the NZ Art Show.
As the largest curated art sale in the country, the show provides an unparalleled platform for emerging and established artists to showcase their work and for people to buy quality, original New Zealand art at affordable prices, all under one roof. For four days over Queen's Birthday weekend (1-4 June) at TSB Arena, the NZ Art Show will feature more than 3000 artworks by hundreds of artists — 80 of whom will be on-site representing their work and meeting with the public.
Celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, the event draws more than 10,000 attendees annually and has sold an impressive 20,000 artworks over the past 14 years. Executive director Carla Russell says the vision behind the annual show is "for every New Zealander to own original New Zealand art." Each year they come closer to making that vision a reality.
For those tinkering with the idea of buying art for the first time, it can be intimidating and difficult to know where to start, but not at the NZ Art Show. As you wander through the labyrinth of exhibitions, you'll find a diverse collection of artwork — contemporary, traditional, abstract, sculpture, photography, street art and more — as well as a notable lack of highbrow pretension.
The NZ Art Show is a relaxed and inspiring environment for everyone to enjoy, from art newbies and aficionados to wage workers and high rollers. Prices of individual pieces generally range from $50 to $5000, with the average artwork sold at around $650.
The four-day event is preceded by the highly anticipated and always sold out Gala evening on Thursday 31 May. Grab your tickets in advance and get a first glimpse of the artworks adorning the gallery walls and be treated to complementary entertainment and a selection of cocktail food, boutique beer and quality wine.
Single-day ($12) and weekend pass ($20) tickets to the NZ Art Show are available this year.
