Overview

Old Hall Gigs began after organisers Sarah Smythe and Thomasin Sleigh were looking for places 'non-rowdy' to listen to their favourite bands. Two years on and the initiative has developed into a the roving series of events that highlight unfamiliar venues around Wellington. Since its inception Old Hall Gigs has featured everything from film screenings, improvisation, comedy, short story readings, and workshops on how to listen to drum solos.

The next destination on the Old Hall Gigs map is Ngaio Town Hall, the usual haunt for local badminton and table tennis players. Come August 15, the roomy community space will host everything from a post-folk duo, a contemporary dance company, an award-winning writer and competitive potato chip tasting.

Kapiti based experimental folk duo Rosy Tin Teacaddy will be the featured band for the eleventh outing of the event. The group will appear in advance of releasing their new EP, an apparent exploration of electronica and story-telling via song.

Cuba Street-based dance company Footnote New Zealand Dance will perform excerpts from their NOW 2015 season, which recently saw a sold-out run at Te Whaea. The company will perform Oomph, by Wellington-based Anna Bate, and an excerpt of Revilery by Auckland choreographer Natalie Maria Clark.

To close out the evening, award-winning writer Lawrence Patchett will give a reading of some of his short stories. The author is best known for his book I Got His Blood On Me: Frontier Tales, which won the NZSA Hubert Church Award for Best First Book of Fiction in 2013.

During the event’s interval a round of competitive potato chip tasting will be held. And just in case that food-related news doesn’t excite the living bejezus out of you, it’s also BYO.
