Overview

2015 saw the closing of Wellington's gentle giant, it's beauty and soul, Kircaldie & Stains. As the make-up counters closed, the christmas collection dwindled and Kirks doors closed for the very last time. Jade Townsend, a Wellington based artist, pays homage to the long life of this department store in her latest exhibition. Showing at Precinct 35, it takes memorabilia from Kirks and creates one last send off in the form of multi-media art works.

As Precinct always does, the intimate gallery has transformed as part of the art. The floor is speckled with old colours and materials from Kirks. Working with Wellington Museum Townsend is inspired by real people and stories, giving us a piece of the old days. The images are powerful and nostalgic, and everything you remember Kirks to be.

Showing at 35 Ghuznee St until 16th November.
