Overview

Today in conceptual festival pieces that are also free (score!), Sila: the breath of the world urges you to experience a familiar place in a new way. Taking over Civic Square, one of the city's most beloved spaces, the outdoor concert takes an interesting form.

John Luther Adams (RNZ talk here) sets 60 Orchestra Wellington musos free from his baton and positions them around the square, where they play at their own pace, with only one proviso: "each sustained tone or rising phrase lasts the full length of an entire exhalation." Luther is a truly original musical thinker, who has won the Pulitzer Price for Music and a 2015 Grammy for Best Contemporary Classical Composition.

It's recommended that you not establish yourself in any one seat- wander around the Square and experience a truly dynamic musical experience of "ecological listening."
