Te Papa Talks: New Zealand and the Legacy of World War I
This free event considers the years between the outbreak of war in 1914 and its end in 1918.
Overview
The beginning and end of war is often our focus. The beginning with young soldiers in new uniforms being waved off to war by loved ones. The end on the beaches of Gallipolli, the trenches of the Western Front, or the shell-shocked return home. But what about the middle? In marking the centenary of World War I, attention is being given to the years between the outbreak of war in 1914 and its end in 1918.
As part of an international symposium on 1917 and its legacy, Te Papa is holding a free public talk on the day after Anzac Day. Visiting historians here for the symposium will give their perspectives on WWI with particular attention paid to the events of 1917. After the talk Te Papa history curator Kristie Ross will give an introduction to the exhibition Gallipoli: The Scale of Our War and you'll have the chance to explore the museum after hours, away from the crowds.
