Toi Te Reo: Language through Art

A night to celebrate Maori Language Week

Overview

In celebration of Te Wiki O Te Reo Maori (Maori Language Week) the Wellington City Council and the New Zealand Book Council are hosting a night of nga toi (art), puoro (music) and korero (storytelling) at the Civic Square.

This years theme is Nga Matua (parents) and how parents foster and nurture the language at home. New Zealand artists, authors and speakers have between eight and ten minutes to speak on the theme which they promise will inspire, entrance and entertain.

Storytellers include Shannon Te Ao whom is currently showing at City Gallery at present: Te Kahureremoa Taumata, singer, songwriter and storyteller; Apirana Taylor, writer; Paora Tibble, writer and Te Reo Maori translator; Suzanne Tamaki, fabric artist; Reuben Friend, curator; Ati Teepa, cultural programmer; and LIANZA Children’s Book Awards winners Norm Heke and Julie Noanoa.
