Overview
This Thursday's Tuatara Open Late at the City Gallery will be their last for 2017, so you're going to want to get amongst the kooky program (still with a decided focus on the occult, as part of their ongoing exhibition, Occulture).
Coming from her role as lecturer in English and Cultural Studies at the University of Canterbury, Erin Harrington will talk on witches in film and popular culture. Her work centres around horror, embodiment, popular and visual culture, around sex and gender, and she also has particular interests in theatre, criticism and dramaturgy. She's also got an amazing-sounding book coming out this year: Women, Monstrosity and Horror Film: Gynaehorror.
After Erin's talk, keep the witchy vibes going with a viewing of Benjamin Christensen's 1922 silent horror masterpiece, Häxan: Witchcraft through the Ages, with a newly-composed live narration and score performed by Dayle Jellyman, Justin Firefly, Dan Yeabsley, Andrew Laking and Thomas Friggens.
Round out your evening by watching the dream-pop duo Purple Pilgrims, composed of sisters Valentine and Clementine Nixon.
