Tuatara Open Late: Split Level View Finder
See Theo Schoon's most comprehensive exhibition after dark.
Overview
For an opportunity to enjoy music, film, community, craft beer and art after dark, head along to City Gallery this August. As a part of the gallery's changing program of late-night events on the first Thursday of the month, this event is absolutely unmissable.
With paintings, drawings and photographs by New Zealand artist Theo Schoon, Split Level View Finder is a detailed and breathtaking curation of art. Other media such as prints, ceramics, jade carvings and decorated gourds will also be on display. Schoon arrived in Aotearoa in 1939 and became a catalyst for modern art. This exhibition is a collection of Schoon's art that rethinks his legacy for 21st century New Zealand. Schoon was interested in what Maori art could offer to modernism, and how he would incorporate culture into his own work. With lots of amazing pieces to marvel at, this exhibition also includes a Schoon mural that has been hanging in Rotorua for almost 30 years. Split Level View Finder is the first comprehensive exhibition of Schoon's art in decades.
Entry is by donation and invites people from all backgrounds and cultures to come and appreciate this inspiring Kiwi art. The bar and galleries will be open from 5pm, with treats from Nikau Cafe available, along with beer from Tuatara, Seresin wine and sounds from DJs Kedron Parker and Greg Street.
