Overview

Mark Robson's 1967 film Valley of the Dolls is a cult American film. Based on Jacqueline Sussan's novel of the same name the film follows three women as the struggle with the perils of Hollywood, love and drugs ('dolls' was a slang term for the downers at the time).

Much like The Room, Valley of the Dolls has copped its fair share of criticism amongst the idolatry. At a 1997 screening of the film in San Francisco, co-star Barbara Parkins told the sold-out crowd, "I know why you like it...because it's so bad!" More than a decade later the movie's status was cemented as one of the dregs of cinema, being included in Harry Medved, Randy Dreyfuss and Michael Medved's The Fifty Worst Films of All Time, published in 1978.

The film is being shown in a one-off screening as part of the Yvonne Todd: Creamy Psychology exhibition currently being held at the City Gallery.
