Overview

Nestled on the corner of Jervois Road and Blake Street there sits a hedonistic hideaway. Well known without being overly marketed, Dida’s has become a staple in Herne Bay for its extensive lists of local, imported and rare wines. Their stock is so comprehensive in fact that the bar boasts, not a wine list, but a journal. Dida’s is small but makes the most of its space with several tables and lounges for patrons to gather around. The interior is elegantly rugged; dark wood and leather give the dimly lit venue an old-world grandeur and warmth providing a welcomed escape from the Auckland winter’s unforgiving wind and rain.

With over 400 different wines in stock, you would not be hard-pressed to find something palatable, but novice winos fear not, the knowledgeable bar staff are on hand, ready and able, to advise you on the best glass to suit your taste. If the wine isn’t enough to keep you coming back for more, the food surely will.

Dida’s provides an outstanding array of tapas (as listed in our Ten Best Tapas article), both traditional and contemporary. The crab claw Montadito is a personal favourite which I find impossible to pass up. Whether you are looking for an after-work drink and nibble or a quiet (or not so quiet) catch up with friends, Dida’s is perfect for any social gathering.

Tasty morsels paired with the perfect vino enjoyed amongst friends in a relaxed and cosy atmosphere —  this is Dida’s in a nutshell. This is one place worth making a regular addition to your social calendar.
