So I heard about this newly opened eatery just down the road from Auckland University. Great, another sloppy student dive. I couldn't have been farther from the truth.

The Station Canteen surprises you with style from the moment you enter. A large, meandering space is well fitted out with mismatched vintage furniture, old worlde photographs lining the walls and a bookshelf heaving with great reads. Sumptuous rugs & chandeliers add to the charm. You can choose to sit at tables, couches or window booths. There are views out over Auckland Harbour & even sneaky peeks into neighbouring rooftop gardens. The staff are genuinely friendly, happy & keen to help.

The menu is displayed on a blackboard & is split between Asian & Italian delights; 2 very different chefs at work here! But the best thing about this place is.......the meals are $6. I'll let that sink in for a moment. Yes, you read it right. $6 will buy you a delicious pad thai overflowing with succulent prawns, spicy & fragrant beef mussaman Curry, spaghetti alla bolognaise or chicken & mushroom carbonara to name just a few. Each dish is authentic, flavoursome & skimping on neither ingredients nor taste. There are several "Chef's Signature" dishes for more than $6, but again still reasonably priced. And with Happy Hour beers from $3, and wines at similar crazy rock-bottom prices, there is something available to quench every thirst.
