Overview
The Station can be found within the unusually shaped building in the middle of Beresford Square, just behind K’Rd. Instead of naming the new establishment after the building’s second evolution as a public toilet, the new owners thankfully decided to tip their hat to its original purpose, a tram stop. The building has since been a handful of eateries and night clubs, the last being The Supper Club.
By day, The Station operates as a bagelry. Served in different 12 varieties on either plain, sesame NY style, blueberry or gluten-free, there really is a bagel for everyone. They range from the traditional combination of cream cheese and berry compote ($6) to the suitably named The LOT ($15), which comes stacked with proscuitto, chicken, bacon, avo, rocket and their secret weapon - bacon jam. The winning concoction comes on three of the dozen varieties and could easily be eaten by the jar, something they may look in to just quietly. Available as either eat in or take away, the bagels would serve as the perfect pre-work breakfast or lunch stop for the surrounding businesses. They can even be ordered alongside your coffee via their Facebook page so it’s ready when you arrive.
By night, the venue turns into the ideal uptown location to sit back with a few friends and watch the sun go down from the deck. The menu evolves to pizza and platters, with two bagels left in for luck. The two platters are targeted toward meat lovers, with a selection of cured meats, cheeses and condiments. Those after a vegetarian option have the choice of two salads and a generous five out of the ten pizzas. Pizzas range from $12.5 for the always-questionable dessert pizza to $19 for the winning combo of salmon, cream cheese and capers or proscuitto with rocket. That dubious dessert pizza, made up of banana, white cacao, custard, dark chocolate and berry swirl, passed with flying colours. I shall have to eat my hat, and quite possibly another dessert pizza.
While the food may not completely rewrite history, The Station is most worthy of a visit just to sample the evolving craft beer, globe trotting wine list and to embark in some banter with the incredibly charismatic staff. You’ll feel right at home upon entry and you'll likely just want to stay for the atmosphere or to get the highest score on the Playstation 1 on the way to the bathroom.
