Bold Worlds: Pictures at an Exhibition

An imaginary tour of an art collection, an army dedication and the greatest living trumpet soloist.

Overview

'Bold Worlds' will showcase three highly acclaimed works from composers spanning Russia, Czech Republic and Australia.

For the main event, conductor Dmitri Slobodeniouk and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra will bring to life Pictures at an Exhibition the most famous work of Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky. The work was composed in memory of Mussorsgky’s friend and painter Victor Hartmann and depicts an imaginary tour of an art collection.

The concert will be opened with Czech composer Janácek’s Sinfonietta, a brass heavy composition dedicated to the strength and determination of his homeland’s armed forces. The horns will continue their rein on centre stage in a performance of Australian composer Brett Dean’s Trumpet Concerto, with the man dubbed as the “greatest living trumpet soloist”, Håkan Hardenberger.
