Overview
Another month, another Red Bull Sound Select. Held across 18 cities around the world, including Auckland and Wellington, each show is curated by local music influencers and showcases up-and-coming local musicians. This time the guys have teamed up with Vice, who have curated a stellar lineup.
Dbldbl, real name: Liam Dargaville, will be one of the acts in attendance with his, "lazy, self-deprecating sad songs you can bounce to," as Red Bull puts it. Hailing from Mount Eden, his hip hop tunes cover off topics such as anxiety, depression and suicide, letting his creative musings come out with some great tunes and often an awkward yet loveable sense of humour.
Meer is another NZ local bringing us her tunes for this event. A rapper who takes inspiration from the less publicised facets of society, her debut single 'Mango' shines light on oppression with close reference to her strict religious background and Arabic background. With her music, she works to speak openly about her background and the issues that relate so closely to mental health. With soft electronic backing, the lyrics really are the focus of each song.
Headlining the event is Khalif Diouf — best known by his stage name, LE1f. Coming from New York, he runs the hip hop label Camp & Street, a subsidiary of Greedhead Music and is an openly gay rapper. He gained attention for his unique and disruptive tunes, resulting in his first studio album Riot Boi being released in 2015. His upbeat, cheeky personality comes across in his music, with fast-paced rapping abilities and big persona propelling his music and spreading his messages on the LBGT community, especially within African American communities.
