Sculpture on the Gulf is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever with MasterChef runner-up Ana Schwarz and former 3-star Michelin chef Nico Fini preparing a Waiheke food extravaganza to be served over the three-week festival in January 2013. Having recently been listed in the New York Times as number 35 of 'Must Do's' in 2013, it is surely a must do for Auckland locals.
Affordable offerings such as freshly made salads, swordfish, salmon, venison, and locally produced brioche and pastries matched with Waiheke wines from selected vineyards Obsidian, Kennedy Point, Goldie Wines in association with the University of Auckland, and Batch Winery, the exclusive sparkling wine provider, will be available with meals and by the glass.
Craft beers, cider and ginger beer from Waiheke Island Brewery will also be on offer, as will Island Coffee, Rangihoua Estate olive oils and Waiheke Aqua water, together with produce from many other local suppliers. A range of Waiheke produce is also available for sale.
With so much to eat and drink, it’s almost hard to remember that the festival is based around art and sculpture.
So far, two outstanding artists have submitted designs for the three week festival. German-born Waiheke resident Delicia Sampero with ‘Temporary’, which comprises three separate pieces each with the word “Temporary” reproduced in black on a yellow background resembling roadside signs, and Melbourne Resident Konstantin Dimopoulos, who will be presenting ‘Beyond Good & Evil’; a sculpture that resembles a blue powder-coated children’s jungle gym serving as a roost for what appear to be several seagulls and a larger number of crows.
No matter where you come from in New Zealand or around the world, this iconic summertime event cannot be missed.
