Overview
One of the most favorably used ‘would you rather’ questions when conversation is imploding is a bit of a tough one. Would you rather be an incredible dancer or an incredible [insert desired talent here]? The organisers of the upcoming Tempo Dance Festival make the answer to this question seem obvious.
The festival boasts an 18-day tribute to all genres of dance: contemporary, ballet, jazz, tango, musical theatre and dance on film, which for those of you who aren’t in the know, is an exciting new form of dance that takes movement from the confines of the stage to the liberation of screen.
Atamira Dance Company are set to kick off the festival with the multimedia installation, Mitimiti. Choreographed by acclaimed dancer and choreographer Jack Gray, the piece aims to break the mould of traditional performance through a combination of film, live kapa haka and surround sound.
Special mention should also be made of a performance that hints at being the perfect activity for a ladies night out. The words 'strong' and 'sensual' spring to mind when thinking of Y Chromozone. Rather ‘fit-ting’ as it’s performed by an all male showcase, making it a clear favourite.
Further highlights include a piece mixing traditional forms of contemporary with aerial circus, body percussion and Pacific folklore; a boundless fusion of hip hop, and a science-fiction comedy dance thriller.
And, if you're still stuck, you could always rebut the options above, and settle on being a phenomenal yoga enthusiast and participant in the festival’s lunchtime yoga classes.
