Overview

Auckland eatery Odettes has gained a sibling. The proud parents are Joost and Clare van Den Berg, who introduced us to Odettes in 2014 and have now opened the doors to their new pride and joy: Hugo's Bistro.

Nestled in the heart of Shortland Street, Hugo's has made itself right at home. The new all-day bistro brings a relaxed urbane vibe to the city with a tasty take on European food. Drawing inspiration from diverse regional cuisines, Chef Josh Kucharick has rustled up a mouthwatering menu.

Whether you're after a morning coffee, want to delve into a delicious lunch or simply just catch up with friends after-hours, Hugo's has it all. With an 'Earlier' and 'Later' menu on offer the delicate diner has got all your culinary needs covered. If you want to start the day off right I'd opt for the coconut yoghurt served with tangy tamarillo and crisp granola, or if you're after something on the savoury side try the spinach and feta omelette with a hint of chilli. Now that winter has arrived, your new best friend will be the warming carrot, cinnamon and walnut porridge. One bite and I promise you won't be able to put your spoon down.

At first glance you may think the dishes sound simple but don't let the words on the page fool you; let the sweet aromas and rich succulent flavours do the talking. Tantalise your tastebuds with dishes like the crumbed veal schnitzel with mushroom and finished off with a subtle jus, and don't forget to wrap your palate around the range of meats served with pickled mushrooms, shallots and radicchio. If you're vegetarian, try the cauliflower, eggplant, cheese and walnuts — it sounds like a strange combination but trust me, it works.

The offerings at Hugo's not only taste incredible but the restaurant also looks impeccable. The intimate space alongside the marble bar top and open kitchen make for a unique dining experience. Perch at the bar, treat yourself to one of the many European wines and watch as the chefs create pure magic.
