Overview
A little disclaimer before I get into this review. I love this place…mind, body and soul. I will tell you to go there. I will demand you do this, because no Mexican food I have consumed (with the exception of that made in Mexico) has compared to the amazing world of Mexican Specialities.
To quote another, "This is probably the place to go to be seen by other burrito lovers. Let's just say that if Norrie were going to snap Mexican food lovers, he would be waiting across the street in his car."
However, what my unabated love of this hole-in-the-wall outlet of perfection will not cause me to do, is gloss over the small (but persistent) negative points. But first, the positives.
1) The food. It does not come any better than this. Tangy/spicy, bursting with flavour (literally – bring napkins) and unmatched in our fair city. Beef, chicken and prawn tacos are the way to go. Get extra sauces. Get the crazy drinks. Prepare for nirvana
2) The atmosphere – are you in Mexico right now? I don't know, but I could sure as hell think I was. From the religious icons to the entire Mexican family that run the establishment, it does not get more genuine than this.
3) The location. Marua Road, Mt Wellington. Nestled close to absolutely nothing, this place is literally a hidden gem.
There are a few nagging problems however. It is not the cheapest joint – but I'm willing to pay more for the goods, so I happily overlook it. Two tacos will sting you about $24, but this will be a defining moment in your life.
The other problem is the popularity. While being far away, it does draw a crowd. Get in early to get a seat.
Finally – it's only open Thur – Sat, 10:00am – 4:00pm. A small window of opportunity, but one that causes a slight mad rush to get there, but balances out with stopping you from getting too much of a good thing.
FYI: The image above is from NO Magazine. It is awesome, and while it does little to demonstrate the food, it does show you this place was cool enough to have models posing in it for a fashion shoot. And I don't often get to include models in my food reviews.
