Overview

Look out, Fortitude Valley. With places like Deer Duck Bistro, Lefty’s, The Scratch, and Toro Bar, it looks like Brisbane’s quality nightlife is migrating to the Western suburbs.

Like its sister, Deer Duck Bistro, Toro Bar is an unexpected cell of old-world glamour on Milton Road, Auchenflower. The Prohibition-era speakeasy vibe of this cosy little nook is complemented by live music on a Friday and Saturday nights, a tasty bar menu and a well-stocked bar. Taxidermy, assorted antique furniture, tasseled lampshades and a mirrored ceiling complete the atmosphere.

An inspired cocktail menu will add some colour and flavour to your night out; try an Avocado Daiquiri ($18) with avocado, lime and coconut, a Jack Handsome ($20) with tobacco infused scotch, cinnamon spice and a mulled wine ice cube, or a Lady Jane ($18) with gin, aperol, Lic 43 and lavender foam. Shared cocktails are also available, such as the In The Garden.c2 for two ($40), with fruit, Pimms, and homemade ginger soda, or the Japanese Sangria for two ($55) with white wine, barley shochu, umeshu and fresh apple with pearls. If by some miracle none of these tickle your fancy, Toro’s fantastic bar manager Matty will whip up something more to your liking.

Fancy a bite with your cocktail? Items on the bar menu include chilli prawn pastries ($12), Moroccan meat balls ($13), chicken parfait and lavosh ($13) share platters of meats, olives, dips and breads ($35), and cheese platters ($12/$24/$36). If you pop by on a Saturday night, you can indulge in the Dinner and Show special, featuring a three course set menu and entertainment by local solo artists and bands. The set menu ($65) features entrees such as the deliciously light cured salmon with quail eggs, beetroot, wasabi aioli, capers and crustacean tuile and mains such as herb gnocchi with lamb and fennel ragu, all capped off with a cheese platter.

Sundays are the day to visit for amazing drink specials, and with a regular Sunday DJ set coming soon, it’s a perfect way to finish off your weekend. All this without the hustle and bustle of the CBD or Valley? Yes please.
