Overview

Scout is proof that simplicity, done properly, is the hardest trick in the book. The venue is unassuming – cosy, unfussy, more living room than café – but the small touches from entrance to exit make it one of Brisbane's most loved coffee spots.

Where plenty of boutique cafes narrow things down to a house muesli, an ambiguous bacon and eggs, and three drinks, Scout goes the other way. Cabinet specials sit alongside a full sweets menu and five or six substantial all-day breakfast mains, holding a rare balance between variety and quality control. The salted caramel milkshake started a flavour trend that's since spread across Brisbane's café scene, and the strawberries and cream and chocolate ganache versions are just as indulgent. The organic lemonade tastes like actual lemons, and the coffee holds its own.

But the bagels are the real drawcard. They've held the title of Brisbane's best bagels for good reason.

Shakes and bagels aside, Scout has a way of inducing a food coma that only more food seems to fix.
