Some experiences are worth venturing out of your comfort zone for — such as a cafe meal at an eatery 30 minutes from the Brisbane CBD, for example. Anstead might not be a place most locals routinely trek to; however Hawkes and Crosby makes the trip worthwhile.

An all-day breakfast menu that combines sweet and sour options certainly does its part, particularly when macadamia granola with lemon sorbet and coconut panna cotta and eggs benedict with pulled pork both feature. Those after more typical midday fare won't be disappointed come lunchtime, either. Start salivating, with handmade potato gnocchi with peas, broad beans and parmesan crumble and 12-hour slow-braised lamb shoulder parcel with onion puree and spring vegetables among the selections.

The food — and the milkshakes in strawberry and white chocolate, salted caramel, chocolate Oreo and vanilla malt flavours — aren't the only attractions here, given that the setting and scenery provide the perfect accompaniment for a casual, country-style outing. A half an hour drive might not quite be the kind of journey you'd make a day out of, but spying the cute Queenslander cottage and surrounding bushland might convince you otherwise.
