Overview

For the sweet tooth, there's a whole new world of delectable pastries to discover in Lisbon. Some of the most unique are made at Casa Piriquita. This Sintra bakehouse has been operating since 1862, named for the wife of the baker, Constância Gomes, and her small height.

You won't find pastéis de nata here. Their specialties? Travesseiro da Casa Piriquita: sugar-crusted flaky pastry pillows with an egg cream and almond filling (and a closely guarded secret ingredient). It was their Quqijadas that were beloved by King Carlos I, made of fresh cheese, sugar, eggs, flour, cinnamon and a sweet pastry case. They also make nozes douradas, a pastéis de Sintra of egg and almond cream in pastry, and pastéis da Cruz Alta, made of egg, almond and white bean cream in pastry.
