Overview
The idea that each country has a unified style of cuisine mightn't be true, but it's one that many a restaurant has helped hungry stomachs believe. When you're eating Vietnamese food, you're probably not thinking about exactly which parts of the nation each dish hails from — unless you're dining at Richmond's latest Vietnamese joint, that is.
An Uong | Eat. Drink. Vietnam is a labour of love for friends and owners Richard, Zico and Le, who each come from different areas of the country in question. Putting together a menu that's designed to be shared, they've ensured their range blends meals and styles from north, south and central Vietnam. If you're thinking that they're trying to take diners on a journey — complete with decor that will make you think you're overseas — you're right.
Highlights of their Vietnamese tapas-like fare include fried chicken ribs, pumpkin spring rolls and grilled beef betel leaf for lunch; plus tofu and quail egg rice paper rolls, beets duck salad, thit kho tau (or caramelised pork belly and eggs) and banh xeo nha trang (Vietnamese crepes) for dinner. Drinks-wise, as well as Australian wines, and local and Vietnamese beers, cocktails prove a highlight. You know you want to try the An Uong Espresso Martini with vodka, coffee liquor, Vietnamese espresso and dark chocolate.
