Street food, live poetry and temple tours are all on the calendar for the 2019 Cumberland Local Festival. The month-long festival celebrates food, the arts, culture, sports and history across the western Sydney region, from Auburn to Granville to Pendle Hill.

One of the biggest happenings is the Ramadan Street Food Festival on Saturday, May 18. From 6pm until midnight, the streets of Auburn will fill with food stalls and food trucks for an epic community feast. It will get busy, so best to catch public transport to this one.

Before that – on 1 May – book yourself a spot at We May As Well Be From Mars, a live performance by the Auburn Poets and Writers Group. Through poetry, stories, songs and sketches, this multicultural troupe will explore the possibility that a one-way trip to another planet a la Elon Musk might be a very good idea. Entry is free, but you must book online.

Other highlights of the Cumberland Local Festival include a tour of Sydney Murugan Temple on April 23, a 2.5-hour long feast at Merrylands' Al Shami Syrian Restaurant on May 12 and a food tour of Granville's many Lebanese delights on May 26. Check out the rest of the program over here.
