Overview

After the success of last year's inaugural festival, the Korean Film Festival in Australia, is back again this year and promises to be even bigger. The programme includes 13 feature films and 7 shorts, chosen to showcase the best of contemporary Korean cinema and, for those keen to scratch a little deeper beneath the surface, there are industry forums, Q&As with directors, cultural performances and food tastings on offer too.

With two movies picking up awards at Cannes last year, along with numerous appearances on the international festival circuit, Korean cinema has been garnering a fair bit of attention recently. A strong home grown film industry, fostered through many years of state intervention and protected by a quota system, has allowed it to compete with Hollywood. As the country has moved towards democracy over the last few years, so its creativity has evolved, allowing a national cinema which is quirky, idiosyncratic and challenging to flourish. The movies chosen for the festival programme cover themes of violence and corruption, relationships, sexuality and the nation's troubled past.
