Strata
This four-day program of acclaimed and boundary-pushing jazz music is popping up at one of the city's most picturesque concert venues.
Overview
Nestled in a Chippendale side street next to its sister venue White Rabbit Gallery, Phoenix Central Park is Sydney's most stunning concert venue. The intricate space is the vision of philanthropist Judith Neilson AM, founder of its neighbouring gallery, and has played host to luminescent and intimate performances from an array of boundary-pushing local acts over the past year. Its next set of performances is part of a jazz-focused music festival it's hosting over four days.
Strata is a celebration of Australian jazz music spanning generations of celebrated performers within the genre. The lineup has been crafted by drummer and electronic musician Laurence Pike of the groups PVT and Szun Waves. In partnership with Phoenix Central Park, Pike has assembled a program filled with some of the country's most renowned and exciting jazz musicians.
"Australia has always punched above its weight in creative music, and the STRATA program draws from the wealth of talent we have living here," says Pike. Some of his picks from the festival include Mike Nock performing his album Ondas for the first time since it was released four decades ago, Phil Slater whose band Pike praises as "one of the great groups in Australian jazz", and the reunion of trio Triosk who haven't performed together for 15 years.
Tickets to the festival are available for free via the venue's ballot system. Each of the four days has its own ballot, so you can put your name down for one or all of the night's performances.
