Overview
Itacate is the second hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant from beloved chef Rosa Cienfuegos. Following the success of Tamaleria in Dulwich Hill, Cienfuegos brought the food she had grown up on in Mexico City to Redfern for another traditional eatery and deli.
Both venues are run with the intention to share authentic Mexican dishes, ingredients and recipes with Sydneysiders. "There aren't many authentic Mexican options in Sydney, and even though you can buy the ingredients from different suppliers and shops, people are not sure how to use them or what they are for," Cienfuegos told Concrete Playground when Tamaleria opened.
The first things that strike you at Itacate are the huge multicoloured mural from artist Alexis Pepper-Hernandez on the wall, and — staying true to the deli aspect of the venue — a huge range of snacks, condiments and drinks that cover the walls around and behind the counter. If you're in need of a hot sauce, horchata or some Mexican lollies, you're at the right place. Alongside these pantry items, you'll find hot empanadas calling for you to take one away and a coffee machine on the counter ready to whip up a cup of joe.
The main attraction, however, is the make-it-your-way street food menu. Keeping it simple, there are just four options — tacos, burritos, quesadillas and nachos — each available for $17.50. With each option, you can take your pick of seven different proteins. Meat-lovers can get their fix with achiote-marinated pork pastor, slow-cooked suadero brisket or Mexican-style chorizo. Alternatively, opt for the refried black beans, shredded chicken tinga or potato with cactus.
While the original Tamaleria is takeaway-only, there's room for dine-in at Itacate. But with just a smattering of tables, it's best to book beforehand to ensure you nab a spot.
