Overview

The Clean Treats Factory is located in an area you would not expect to find a health food cafe. Surrounded by warehouses and large storage units in the industrial part of Alexandria, it's a real diamond in the rough. But there is a reason for its location: it needs the space. As the name suggests, the cafe has entire factory attached to the dining space, as well as a work-in-progress yoga studio in the back, and storage for the health products it sells through its online store.

The founder Charlie de Haas — Charlie and the Clean Treats Factory, get it? — has always been a firm believer in finding and maintaining balance through a healthy lifestyle and balanced diet. She also believes that you are what you eat, so you need to fill yourself up with the right foods. De Haas started Clean Treats in 2014 by selling gluten, dairy and refined sugar-free balls different cafes. Her tasty snacks became so popular and she decided to open her own cafe.

And it's not just one of those dainty little places dotted all around Sydney. When you sit down to dine at Clean Treats you are inside a large white warehouse made to look like a home, with white wooden tables, black and white photographs on the walls and big potted plants dotted around. Soft music plays throughout, but it's not enough to disturb you — just enough to calm you as you dig into the vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free meals.

Clean Treats take salad bowls to a whole new level, most notably with the Mexican bowl that includes pickled radish, spinach, cherry tomatoes, coconut yogurt with purple corn chips and sweet roasted capsicum ($17.90). On a hot day, try one of the smoothie bowls, which are packed with fruits, fibre, and colour ($14.90). And it wouldn't be a health food cafe without a superfood latte — try the Butterfly Blue, a bubblegum dream with maca, butterfly pea flower, and lumuca, a prebiotic fibre.

If you're feeling absolutely stuffed but still want a sweet treat, stop by at the glass counter at the front to pick up one of the bliss balls, slices, peanut butter cups or chocolate bites.
