Overview

Wellington's vibrant street festival CubaDupa may have been cancelled for 2020, but the music is set to return to the Cuba precinct this June. Classical on Cuba is a new creative partnership between Orchestra Wellington, the organisers of CubaDupa and WellingtonNZ, which will see 20 ensembles play over 100 events in 15 venues.

Musicians from New Zealand's oldest regional orchestra have been rehearsing in lockdown to prepare for the two-day event on 27 and 28 June. The orchestra will be divided into small chamber groups to make up 20 ensembles, including string quartets, brass trios and percussion quintets. Voices New Zealand will also present a six-piece ensemble called Six on Cuba.

Organisers say the intention behind the event is to support the Cuba Street precinct bars and restaurants and to bring intimate live classical music to the ears of patrons seated at their tables. The venues include much-loved establishments such as San Fran, Laundry Bar, Rogue & Vagabond, Hotel Bristol, Fortune Favours, Eva Beva, 1154 Pastaria and {Suite} Gallery.

Tickets cost $5 per show and go on sale Tuesday, 9 June. All proceeds go to the participating venues.
